Senior citizens on the Internet

Most people would probably think that the fastest growing Internet population is the "under 20 years-old" group. In fact, it is just the opposite-the "55 to 74 year-old" group.

More and more seniors are turning to the Internet to keep in touch with family members (through electronic mail or Internet chat), keep track of finances and keep in touch with events and issues that affect their specific age niche and are important to them.

The single best seniors site is, simply enough, SeniorCom.

SeniorCom has, among other categories, Community Calendar, Senior News Network, Prime Lifestyles, The Message Center and Senior Chat.

The Community Calendar has listings for a diverse group of events of interest to seniors. Topics include arts and entertainment, classes, clubs, trips and chat. The events can be posted by anyone

Senior Chat is an excellent, active senior chat with diverse rooms such as Club SeniorCom, Cancer Support Room, Singles Room and the most popular, 50 Plus Lounge.

In Senior Chat you can discuss live what ails you or makes you smile. Talk about your vacations, meet old and new friends or just see what fun other mature adults are having.

The Message Center "allows SeniorCom members to send messages to each other. It's like a private message in the chat room that waits for you to come and receive it."

To post a message or community calendar event or participate in chat, you need to register. The registration is free and only asks for your name, e-mail address and password of your choice. Instructions enable even the least techo-savvy individual to register painlessly.

Senior News Network (SNN) is a separate site also maintained by SeniorCom that is devoted to the latest news for seniors.

SNN is actually a compilation of articles from senior news magazines including "Senior Magazine," "Maturity USA," "Grand Times Magazine" and several others. You can search by category through all the articles from the SNN home page.

Whether you are interested in coping with the loss of a loved one, needing financial advice or wanting tips to keep from spoiling your grandkids, it is all covered on Senior News Network.

Another offshoot site that is also run by SeniorCom, is Prime Lifestyles. This can be accessed directly or from the SeniorCom home page.

In Prime Lifestyles, you learn housing or community options for retirement.

With a large, searchable database and plenty of articles from unbiased sources, you are sure to get helpful advice.

If you want more living options, jump over to Senior Sites.

"With over 5000 listed communities, Senior Sites is a valuable resource for seniors and their families interested in exploring the non-profit housing option."

Senior Sites has a searchable database so you can quickly get a list of facilities in your area based on your particular level of care needs.

Another good site for the 55-and-over is SeniorNet.

SeniorNet is "a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to build a community of computer-using seniors." Join the group that makes the computer needs of the seniors a priority.

You are never too old to get on the Internet and now may be the best time to start learning what resources seniors have online.
