Religion online

On October 4, 1997 the Promise Keepers held a huge Washington, D.C. rally called "Stand in the Gap: A Sacred Assembly" (SITG). This "Christ-centered ministry dedicated to uniting men through vital relations to become Godly influences in their world" was captured online via pictures, streaming live audio and chat sessions at the Official Promise Keepers Home Page. Fortunately, for those interested, the Web site stays up all year round with topics that concern Promise Keepers.

This spotlight on Christianity and religion brings me around to, once again, review religions online.

Global Christian Network (GCN) claims to have the "Largest Christian Search Engine." Created in the Yahoo!-style of categories, you can either browse by topic or do a search.

The GCN has a good variety of chat topics including many specific to denominations. GCN claims to monitor every chat room, so you shouldn't have to worry about inappropriate or offensive talk.

Still the best Bible resource on the Internet, The Bible Gateway offers searches by passage or words in seven different versions on the Bible and in seven different languages. You can also get topical searches and see cross-references and footnotes.

Though much more commercialized than a year ago when I last reviewed this site, the Jewish Communication Network still keeps the Jewish reader very informed and entertained and is much expanded.

The interested visitor can read about traditions, keep up with calendar events or stay informed with timely articles.

As I was reading through the JCN site I even found a link to a small, but intriguing Web site, "The Conversion to Judaism Home Page." You can not only find out what being a Jew means and how to convert, but also get in immediate e-mail contact with a local rabbi, whether you are interested in the conservative, orthodox, reconstructionist or reform movements.

The Hindu Universe Web site is a good resource for Hindu studies. There are some Web site links that go no where and other annoyances, but it is well organized and has a nice search engine.

Spirituality/Yoga/Hinduism Home Page is a more complete guide, but is lacking the polished touch or a search engine. This award-winning site is a "must visit" for everyone wanting detailed information and links to just about anything related to Hinduism.

Al-Islam, the Islamic site offers: "If you are not a Muslim, then let this site serve as a means of introducing Islam to you, and provide you with options for exploring the beauty of this religion further. If you are a Muslim, then let this site serve as a repository for advancing your knowledge about Islam further."

Al-Islam does well meeting its goals and covers just about everything you would want to know in an easy-to-find, easy-to-understand format including a search engine and links to "The Holy Qur'an."

The Islam Page is another Web site for the Islamic-interested or devoted. This well done personal home page has some of the same links as the Al-Islam page, but also many new ones that shouldn't be missed.

DharmaNet International is a clean, simple Buddhism resource site that covers plenty of topics via long lists of Web page links. Far more comprehensive than most major search sites, the DharmaNet International site has most everything.

Virtuous Reality Home Page is an excellent kid's site on Buddhism. With colorful graphics and language geared toward a younger audience, this site does a good job of explaining the religion in a fun way.

If  you want to learn more about a particular religion, check Facets of Religion. This site covers the religions mentioned here plus many other ones including Jainism, Pantheism and Taoism.
