Promo: Getting a new computer for Christmas? Find out what you need to know before you shop... If you find your old computer just can't handle the newer programs or getting on the Internet, it might be time to buy a new one. Here's what to look for. First, you will want to get a Pentium or 686-based PC or a PowerMacintosh. Next, make sure you get 32MB or more of memory, called RAM. If it has less, you can probably upgrade it to 32MB for less than $100. A 2GB or larger hard drive is almost mandatory today with all the large programs. You will also need a modem to get on the Internet. A 33.6 kbps modem will work fine. Most multi-media systems will include a sound card and speakers, be sure they are listed. Also, when comparing, watch for details like "monitor priced separately." A good 15" monitor can cost $300 or more dollars and needs to be budgeted in. For $150 or less I recommend a Lexmark color inkjet printer for high-quality black and white or color pages. Don't forget to pick up a full-duplex printer cable with it. Finally, get a good surge protector that works with both your phone line and electrical outlet. You may want to look up some of the latest technical acronyms before trying to compare different computers. Check PCWebopadeia.com for simple, but complete explanations. Now that you know what you need, visit ComputerESP and get a free, comprehensive model, price and feature comparison for almost every computer on the market. And, with such great deals available at your fingertips, you may want to purchase your next computer online, or, you can use the prices to compare to your local computer retailers. With a little research and patience, you can get the best deal on a computer that does what you want. From age 6 to 96 and beyond, there is something on the Internet for everyone.
